HISTORY
The first meeting of ALTAIR SKI & SPORTS CLUB was held on March 11, 1987 with
twenty-three members. By 1989, membership was over 200. The name "ALTAIR" was
submitted by an ALTAIR member, Val Stone. ALTAIR means "the first magnitude star,
Alpha." Bob Caldwell designed our logo which is copyrighted. PURPOSE
The purpose of ALTAIR is to promote skiing and other recreational activities designed to
increase the enjoyment of sports by its members. ALTAIR has active sports activities and
events in these areas: skiing, hiking, walking, jogging, bowling, tennis, volleyball,
golf, biking and softball. In addition to sports activities, ALTAIR sponsors a wide
variety of social events and out-of-town trips.
GOVERNING BOARD
ALTAIR is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the President,
Vice-President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Board-Members-At-Large.
Elections are held for all five positions annually in May.
The Board of Directors and all ALTAIR members are governed by ALTAIR'S
BY-LAWS.
MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY
Any person of good character who is 21 or over may apply for membership. Dues are
$75 per year for membership. The term of all memberships is Nov.1st to
Oct.
31st of the following year.
A person shall be termed "guest" if they have not applied
for membership and are attending an activity of ALTAIR. A guest will be expected to follow
the same rules and accept the same responsibilities as a member.
HOW TO FIND OUT ABOUT ACTIVITIES
1. Monthly Newsletter - All the activities and events are described in
the monthly newsletter. The newsletter is E-mailed to ALTAIR members and can
also be read or downloaded from the website.
2. Trip Captains or Contact Person are ALTAIR members who plan, promote
and conduct the various events. If you have questions, just call the person listed in the
newsletter.
3. General Meeting - Trips and activities are discussed at the General
Meeting each month. The General Meeting is always the second Wednesday of the month,
currently held at The
Vets Club, Willamette St.
4. And of course, the Calendar and the newsletter on This Website.
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR ACTIVITIES
Many of the activities have a maximum number of people who can participate. Since there
are close to 300 members in ALTAIR, many events fill quickly. If you see an event in which
you would like to participate, it's important to sign up as soon as possible.
1. General Meeting - You can sign up before the meeting (6:00-7:00) and
after the meeting by locating the sign on the table for the event that interests you.
Please note:
a. The sign-up sheet asks for your name and phone# , and member
number.
b. In most cases, you must pay for the event at the time you sign
up. Sometimes you are asked to pay the full amount and other times a deposit is
required with payment in full later.
c. You must pay for each event with a separate check or a credit
card.
2. Contact Trip Captain - If you cannot attend the General Meeting, call
the trip captain listed in the newsletter and ask to be signed up for the event. Payment
must be made directly with the trip captain.
BASIC TRIP REGULATIONS
1. Sign-up for a trip is not complete until you have paid the required
fees or deposit for the trip, and a waiver has been signed.
2. The trip captains have the responsibility to record all sign-ups and
account for all trip related expenses.
3. Trip waiting lists may be started. As vacancies on the trip list
occur, places will be offered persons on the waiting list in the order in which they
signed up.
4. If you need to cancel, the trip captain must be notified.
5. Deposits for a trip are non-refundable unless:
a. The trip is canceled.
b. Your spot is filled by someone on the waiting list.
c. You sell your own spot to another person, with approval.
6. Overnight trips are usually listed in the newsletter for 4 months.
Sign-up can be at the General Meeting or by contacting the trip captain.
NO SMOKING & ALCOHOL POLICY
1. There is no smoking at ALTAIR functions. Smoking may be done outside.
On out-of-town events, there is no smoking in shared rooms unless all people in the room
agree to allow it.
2. ALTAIR alcohol policy promotes responsible drinking any time alcohol
is consumed:
a. Alcohol will not be served by its membership to a visibly
intoxicated person.
b. Alcohol will not be allowed during the last four hours
preceding the conclusion of
any out-of- town trip.
c. The Club shall use licensed, insured caterers at all major
functions.
d. Club funds may not be used to purchase alcoholic beverages at
any time.
